The derivative, built upon this foundation, gives us a precise way to measure instantaneous rates of change. This exploration delves into these fundamental ideas, their properties, rules of evaluation, and their far-reaching applications.


The Concept of a Limit – Getting Infinitesimally Close

The idea of a limit is central to all of calculus. It formalizes the notion of "approaching" a value.

  • Informal Definition: We say the limit of a function f(x)f(x) as xx approaches a value cc is LL, written limxcf(x)=L\lim_{x \to c} f(x) = L, if we can make the value of f(x)f(x) arbitrarily close to LL by choosing xx sufficiently close to cc (but not equal to cc).

  • Neighborhood (NBD) of a Point: An open interval containing a point is called a neighborhood of that point. For a point cc, a δ\delta-neighborhood is the set of points (cδ,c+δ)(c-\delta, c+\delta) for some δ>0\delta > 0. A deleted neighborhood excludes the point cc itself.

  • Formal (ϵ\epsilon-δ\delta) Definition of a Limit: limxcf(x)=L\lim_{x \to c} f(x) = L if for every number ϵ>0\epsilon > 0, there exists a corresponding number δ>0\delta > 0 such that if 0<xc<δ0 < |x-c| < \delta, then f(x)L<ϵ|f(x)-L| < \epsilon.

  • Direct Substitution: If the function is continuous at the point, simply substitute the value.
  • Factoring and Canceling: For rational functions resulting in 0/00/0, factor the numerator and denominator and cancel common factors.
  • Rationalizing: For limits involving square roots, multiply the numerator and denominator by the conjugate to simplify.
  • Limits at Infinity: For rational functions, divide the numerator and denominator by the highest power of xx in the denominator.

Staying Connected: Continuity – No Jumps, No Gaps

  • Definition: A function ff is continuous at a point cc if it meets three conditions:
    1. f(c)f(c) is defined.
    2. limxcf(x)\lim_{x \to c} f(x) exists.
    3. limxcf(x)=f(c)\lim_{x \to c} f(x) = f(c).
    Intuitively, a function is continuous if its graph can be drawn without lifting the pen from the paper.

  • Rational functions: Continuous on their domains (discontinuous where the denominator is zero).

Intermediate Value Theorem (IVT)

If a function ff is continuous on a closed interval [a,b][a,b], and NN is any number between f(a)f(a) and f(b)f(b) (where f(a)f(b)f(a) \neq f(b)), then there exists at least one number cc in the open interval (a,b)(a,b) such that f(c)=Nf(c)=N. In essence, a continuous function must take on all values between its endpoints.


Measuring Change: Differentiability – Smoothness and Slopes

Differentiability is a stronger condition than continuity. It implies that a function is not only connected but also "smooth" with no sharp corners or cusps.

    • Addition of differentiable and non-differentiable functions is always non-differentiable.
    • Product of differentiable and non-differentiable functions maybe differentiable or non-differentiable.
    • If g(x)g(x) is a differentiable function and f(x)=g(x)f(x) = |g(x)| is a non-differentiable function at x=ax = a, then g(a)=0g(a) = 0.
    • If both f(X)f(X) and g(X)g(X) are non-differentiable at x=ax = a, then f(x)+g(x)f(x) + g(x) may be differentiable or non-differentiable at x=ax = a.

    • Sum/Difference Rule: (f±g)=f±g(f \pm g)' = f' \pm g'

Analyzing Function Behavior: Monotonicity and Extrema

Derivatives are the ultimate tool for analyzing the behavior of functions.

  • Monotonicity:
    • Increasing/Decreasing: A function is increasing on an interval if its values rise as xx increases, and decreasing if its values fall.
