If we take the divergence of both sides: (×B)=μ0(J)\nabla \cdot (\nabla \times \vec{B}) = \mu_0 (\nabla \cdot \vec{J}). Sometimes working directly with E\vec{E} and B\vec{B} fields can be cumbersome. Luckily, we can often express them in terms of potentials, which can simplify calculations.

Magnetic Vector Potential (A\vec{A}): Since Gauss's Law for magnetism states B=0\nabla \cdot \vec{B} = 0 (the divergence of B\vec{B} is always zero), and we know that the divergence of a curl of any vector field is always zero ((×A)=0\nabla \cdot (\nabla \times \vec{A}) = 0), we can always define B\vec{B} in terms of a magnetic vector potential A\vec{A}:

This automatically satisfies B=0\nabla \cdot \vec{B} = 0.
